21 And he stretched, and measured himself upon the child three times, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord, my God, let the soul of this child, I beseech thee, return into his body.

21 καὶ ἐνεφύσησε τῷ παιδαρίῳ τρὶς καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο τὸν Κύριον καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε ὁ Θεός μου, ἐπιστραφήτω δὴ ἡ ψυχὴ τοῦ παιδαρίου τούτου εἰς αὐτόν. 22 καὶ ἐγένετο οὕτως, καὶ ἀνεβόησε τὸ παιδάριον.

Καὶ τὰ χέρια καὶ τὰ πόδια δὲν μᾶς δόθηκαν γιὰ νὰ κλέβουμε καὶ ν ̓ ἁρπάζουμε καὶ νὰ κτυποῦμε τοὺς ἄλλους ἀλλὰ γιὰ νὰ τὰ χρησιμοποιοῦμε στὶς θεάρεστες ἐργασίες· οἱ πιὸ ἀδύναμοι στὴν ψυχὴ γιὰ νὰ δίνουν ἐλεημοσύνη στοὺς φτωχοὺς καὶ νὰ βοηθοῦν ὅσους ἔχουν ἀνάγκη κι ἔτσι νὰ τελειοποιοῦνται, καὶ οἱ ἰσχυρότεροι στὴν ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα γιὰ ν ̓ ἀσκοῦν ἀκτημοσύνη καὶ νὰ μιμοῦνται τὸν Χριστὸ καὶ τοὺς ἅγιους μαθητές Του καὶ γιὰ νὰ δοξάζουν τὸν Θεὸ καὶ νὰ θαυμάζουν πῶς ὑπάρχει καὶ στὰ μέλη μας ἡ σοφία Του.

And the arms and legs were not given to us so that we may steal and grab and beat others, but that we may use them in labours that please God: to those who are weaker in soul, so that they may give alms to the needy, thus perfecting themselves, and to those who are stronger in soul and in body, so that they may practice abstinence from possessions and thus imitate Christ and His holy disciples, and glorify God, and marvel, at how His wisdom exists in our body parts.

καὶ ἐξεκινήθη ἡ ψυχὴ βασιλέως Συρίας περὶ τοῦ λόγου τούτου, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Οὐκ ἀναγγελεῖτέ μοι τίς προδίδωσίν με βασιλεῖ Ισραηλ; 12

And the mind of the king of Syria was very much disturbed concerning this thing; and he called his servants, and said to them, Will you not tell me who betrays me to the king of Israel? 12

Ἄς κρατήσουμε στὴν ψυχὴ μας τὴν σημερινὴ ἑορτὴ μὲ εὐγνωμοσύνη καὶ ὑπευθυνότητα, καὶ μπορεῖ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Θεοῦ, ποὺ κατῆλθε μὲ τὴ μορφὴ πυρίνων γλωσσῶν στοὺς Ἀποστόλους, - νὰ ἐπισκεφτεῖ καὶ ἐμᾶς – ἴσως σὰν μιὰ πυρκαγιὰ ποὺ θὰ μᾶς καταυγάσει, ὅπως τὴν Φλεγόμενη Βάτο, ἤ θὰ μᾶς ἀγγίξει σὰν τὴ γαλήνια, ἁπαλὴ φωνὴ ποὺ ἄκουσε ὁ Προφήτης στην ἐρημιὰ ὅπου βρισκόταν ὁ Θεός, μέσα ἀπὸ τὴν ταπείνωσή Του, τὴν παράδοση Του σὲ μᾶς, τὴν ἀγάπη Του.

Let us therefore responsibly and gratefully keep this Feast. And may the Spirit of God Who came in tongues of fire upon the Apostles, come to us also - perhaps like a fire that sets us aglow and makes us like a Burning Bush, or touches us like the still, small voice which the Prophet heard in the wilderness in which God was, in His quiet humility, in His surrender to us, in His love for us.

Γιατὶ παρόλο ποὺ κάτι τέτοιο δὲν θεωρεῖται ἁμαρτία, ἀποδεικνύει ὅμως ὅτι ἡ ψυχὴ εἶναι ἄρρωστη καὶ δὲν ἔχει ἀπαλλαγεῖ ἀπὸ τὸ πάθος τῆς πορνείας.

Because, although this may not be considered a sin, it does reveal that the soul is ailing, and is not yet rid of the passion of fornication.

Γι ̓ αὐτὸ καὶ ὁ γιατρὸς τῶν ψυχῶν μας ἔβαλε τὸ φάρμακο στὰ ἀπόκρυφα τῆς ψυχῆς, ὅπου ἤξερε ὅτι βρίσκονται οἱ αἰτίες τῆς ἀρρώστειας καὶ εἶπε, “ὅποιος βλέπει γυναίκα καὶ τὴν ἐπιθυμεῖ ἤδη μοίχευσε μαζί της μέσα στὴν καρδιά του·[6] δὲν θεραπεύει τόσο τὴ λαγνεία τῶν ματιῶν ὅσο τὴν ψυχὴ μέσα μας, ἐπειδὴ αὐτὴ δὲν χρησιμοποιεῖ ὅπως πρέπει τὰ μάτια ποὺ ὁ Θεὸς μᾶς ἔδωσε γιὰ τὸ καλό μας.

It is for this reason, that the physician of our souls placed the remedy in the innermost depths of our soul, where He knew the causes of the illness would be found, saying "whomsoever looks at a woman and desires her, has already committed adultery with her, within his heart"; it does not heal the lusting of the eyes, as much as the soul within us, because it is the soul that does not make proper use of the eyes which God gave us for our benefit.

Καὶ τὰ βάσανα πάντοτε τεμαχίζουν τὴν ψυχὴ ἢ τὸ σῶμα τῶν ἀνθρώπων.

And suffering always cuts into the soul or into the body of people.

It is not possible for the soul to become the image of God, except only through divine grace and man's faith, when he concentrates his mind with extreme humility in incessant prayer.

Τὸ μόνο πού ἔχεις νὰ κάνεις, εἶναι ν’ ἀναπτύξεις τὰ πνευματικὰ φτερὰ πού σοῦ δόθηκαν ὅταν βαφτίστηκες στὸ ὄνομά Του καὶ νὰ ἐπιθυμήσεις μ’ ὅλη σου τὴν ψυχὴ ν’ ἀνεβεῖς ἐκεῖ ὅπου ἀναλήφθηκε ὁ Ἴδιος.

You have only to nurture the spiritual wings that you were given at your Baptism in His name, and to desire with all your strength to climb up there where He ascended.

Ἰδέτωσαν πτωχοί, καὶ εὐφρανθήτωσαν, ἐκζητήσατε τὸν Θεόν, καὶ ζήσεται ἡ ψυχὴ ἡμῶν.

Let the needy see this, and be glad; seek ye God, and your soul shall live.

Μιὰ καλλιεργημένη συνείδηση ἐπιτελεῖ τεράστιο πνευματικὸ ἔργο στὴν ψυχὴ κάθε ἀνθρώπου.
