The saying might have worn out of my memory, had not a circumstance immediately followed which served indelibly to fix it there.

اگر بلافاصله واقعهای پیش نیامده بود که صحت حرفهای بسی را به ثبوت برساند امکان داشت آن را فراموش کنم:

My eyes fix on the telephone hanging from the wall.

نگاهم روی گوشی تلفن، که به دیوار نصب شده است، ثابت میشود.
